Where to actually book, by budget and area - and how far ahead you need to be.

Slovenia has almost no large hotel chains outside Ljubljana and Portoroz, which is mostly good news: what you get instead is small, family-run, and often better.

The trade-off is availability. A 20-room hotel in Bled sells out for July by spring, and there is no overflow property down the road to catch you. Booking windows here are longer than the size of the country suggests.

Prices split cleanly by location rather than by category. Ljubljana and Bled sit at the top, the coast peaks hard in August and drops sharply either side, and everywhere inland is noticeably cheaper for the same standard. The table below compares the main bases by what you would realistically pay and when to book.

Where to stay in Ljubljana

The old town is compact enough that almost anything inside the ring is walkable, so the real question is noise. Riverside rooms are beautiful and loud on weekends. A street or two back you get the same location for less money and considerably more sleep.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a hotel in Slovenia?

For Bled and the coast in July and August, three to four months. Ljubljana is more forgiving outside festival weekends. Off-season, a few weeks is usually enough.

What is the tourist tax?

A small per-person nightly charge collected by the property, separate from the room rate. It varies by municipality and is usually reduced for children.

Are hotels in Slovenia expensive?

Less than Austria or Italy for equivalent quality. Bled and Ljubljana are the priciest; inland towns and the Soca valley are noticeably cheaper.

Is breakfast usually included?

Almost always, and it tends to be generous. Half board with dinner is common outside the cities and often good value.

Do hotels have parking?

Outside the cities, nearly always and usually free. In central Ljubljana and Piran, expect to pay, and check before booking.

Which base works for a first trip?

Ljubljana if you want one hotel for the whole trip. Bled or Bohinj if the trip is built around the Alps rather than the city.
