Slovenia only has a handful of cities worth building a stop around, and they do not compete with each other – each does something different. Ljubljana is the capital and, for most itineraries, the only city that needs more than a day.
Maribor, Slovenia’s second city, sits in the Stajerska wine region and makes more sense as a stop between Ljubljana and Vienna or Graz than as a standalone destination. Celje and Ptuj are smaller still – both are easy day trips from Ljubljana, and both reward the extra hour of driving with Roman ruins and medieval castles that see a fraction of the capital’s tourist traffic.

Which Slovenian city should I visit if I only have time for one?
Ljubljana. It is the capital, the most walkable, and close enough to Bled, Postojna and the Julian Alps that you can day-trip from it without moving hotels.
How many days should I spend in Ljubljana?
Two full days covers the old town, the castle, and one museum at a comfortable pace. Add a third if you want a day trip to Bled or the Postojna caves without leaving Ljubljana as your base.
Is Maribor worth visiting, or is it skippable?
Worth it if you are interested in wine or already driving between Slovenia and Austria. It is not a must-see on a first, short trip focused on Ljubljana and Bled.
Can I visit Piran as a day trip from Ljubljana?
Yes, though it is a tight one – the drive is around 1 hour 45 minutes each way. An overnight lets you see the old town without the crowds that arrive midday.
Which city has the best public transport connections?
Ljubljana, by a wide margin. It is the country transport hub, with buses and trains to every other city on this list. Piran and Bled are best reached by car or a direct bus from Ljubljana.
Are Celje and Ptuj worth visiting if I have already seen Ljubljana?
Yes, if you have an extra day and enjoy history – both have Roman-era sites and medieval castles with far fewer visitors than Ljubljana. They work best as day trips rather than overnight stays.
