Slovenian Mountains
Triglav, the Julian Alps and the ranges most visitors never reach.
Slovenia packs four distinct mountain ranges into a country smaller than New Jersey, and the difference between them matters more than the map suggests.
The Julian Alps hold Triglav and the postcard valleys most visitors come for, and they carry the crowds to match. The Kamnik-Savinja Alps just east are almost as dramatic and far quieter. The Karavanke form the ridge along the Austrian border, and Pohorje in the north-east is gentler, rounded and forested – the range locals go to when they want a walk rather than a climb.
The table below is about matching a range to the trip you can actually take: how many days it needs, how hard the walking is, and where to base yourself. Difficulty ratings assume marked trails in summer conditions, not via ferrata or winter ascents.
| Peak or area | Best for | Days needed | Difficulty | Nearest base | When to go | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Triglav & Julian Alps | Slovenia’s highest peak, alpine huts | 2-3 | Demanding | Bled or Bohinj | Jul-Sep | Read guide |
| Kamnik-Savinja Alps | Dramatic ridges without the crowds | 2-3 | Moderate to demanding | Kamnik or Logarska Dolina | Jun-Oct | Coming soon |
| Karavanke | Border ridge walks, long views | 1-2 | Moderate | Jesenice or Trzic | Jun-Oct | Coming soon |
| Pohorje | Forest trails, family walking, skiing | 1-2 | Easy | Maribor | Year-round | Coming soon |
| Velika Planina | Herdsmen huts, easy plateau walking | Half day | Easy | Kamnik | May-Oct | Read guide |
| Vrsic Pass | Highest road pass, 50 hairpin bends | Half day | Easy (by car) | Kranjska Gora | Jun-Oct | Coming soon |

Climbing Triglav
At 2,864 metres Triglav is the country’s highest peak and appears on the national flag. The standard routes take two days with a night in a mountain hut, and none of them are a casual walk – expect exposed sections and secured cable.

Do I need a guide to climb Triglav?
Not legally, but the standard routes include exposed, cabled sections where a via ferrata set and a head for heights matter. If you have no alpine experience, hire a guide.
When is hiking season in the Julian Alps?
Roughly late June to late September for high routes. Snow can linger on north faces into July, and huts close from early October.
Which range is best if I want quiet trails?
The Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Similar scenery to the Julian Alps, a fraction of the foot traffic, especially outside August.
Can I hike in Slovenia without a car?
In parts. Bled, Bohinj and Kranjska Gora have bus connections, but most trailheads in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Karavanke effectively need one.
Do mountain huts need booking?
Yes in summer, particularly the Triglav huts. Book weeks ahead for July and August weekends.
Is Pohorje worth it if I have seen the Alps?
As a hiking destination, it is much gentler. It suits families, mountain biking and winter skiing more than a scenery-first trip.
