Hotels, apartments, hostels and campsites - where to base yourself and what it costs.

Where you sleep in Slovenia matters more than it does in most countries, because so much of the trip is driving between places that are 40 minutes apart.

Pick the wrong base and you spend the week backtracking. Ljubljana works as a single base for a short first trip – Bled, Postojna and the Karst are all inside 90 minutes. Anything centred on hiking, rafting or the coast is better served by moving once or twice rather than day-tripping from the capital.

Slovenia has very little in the way of large resort chains, so most of what you will book is independently run – which is generally good for value and less good for last-minute availability in July and August.

Slovenian Hotels

Hotels here skew small and family-run outside Ljubljana and Portoroz. That means character and breakfast worth getting up for, but also fewer rooms and earlier sell-outs. Book Bled and the coast well ahead for summer; Ljubljana has more slack outside festival weekends.

Apartments in Slovenia

Apartments are the default for families and anyone staying more than three nights. Outside the cities you will often be renting a floor of someone's house, which is normal here and usually excellent value. Check whether parking is included – in Piran and central Ljubljana it rarely is.

Camping & Glamping in Slovenia

Slovenia does campsites unusually well, especially along the Soca and around Bohinj. Glamping has grown fast, and the better sites are genuinely comfortable rather than a tent with a rug. Both need booking ahead in high summer and both close for much of the winter.
