Tips in Slovenia

Start here

New to Slovenia? Four questions, in order, and the guides that answer each one.

Slovenia is small enough to cross in a morning and varied enough that the trip you plan badly is nothing like the trip you plan well. This page is the shortest route to the second one.

Start with how long you have

Two or three days. Ljubljana as a single base, with a day trip to Bled or Postojna. No second hotel, no repacking. See Slovenian cities.

Five to seven days. Ljubljana plus one move – either north into the Julian Alps and the Soca valley, or south-west to the coast. Trying to do both in a week means spending it in the car.

Ten days or more. Now the wine regions, the karst and the quieter mountain ranges become realistic rather than rushed.

Then pick how you want to spend the days

Hiking and water point you at the mountains and lakes. Old towns and food point you at the cities and the table. Most trips are a mix, but the balance decides where you sleep.

Then book the right kind of bed

Slovenia has very few large hotel chains. Most of what you will book is small and independently run, which is good for value and bad for late availability. The accommodation section compares hotels, apartments, hostels and campsites by what they actually cost and how far ahead you need to be.

Then sort the practical details

When to go, how to get around, what a day costs, whether you need a car. All of it is in Slovenia travel tips.
